TrueNAS

After a bit of trial and error, I have finally got my new TrueNAS server up and running. It is running on a Core I5 with 8 GB of RAM and a 512 MB NVMe SSD as the OS drive.

One thing I didn’t notice when installing the OS is that the default login username is truenas-admin, which you will want to change during the first login.

Some of my preliminary feelings are that this software is fantastic. There are more built-in apps that can be installed than our Synology drive has. Installing the apps is relatively easy, but configuring them can sometimes be a challenge.

My first app I installed was Next Cloud. Next Cloud is a free, open-source alternative to Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive. It allows you to access your folders and files from anywhere as long as you have an Internet connection. I have not, as of this writing, opened it to the Internet so I can access it from anywhere; I am still addressing security concerns.

The next app I installed on top of Next Cloud was Next Office. This is designed to enable you to create documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and drawings using apps directly in the browser. As of this writing, I don’t have it working. The new document will begin to load, but it just stops. I will give you more information on that later.

As of this writing, I am pleased with the way TrueNAS has been working for my home storage needs. I am also pleased with Next Cloud for meeting my needs when I’m away from home or working on different computers. I will be giving more information soon.
